BUNGALOW BREEZE
Perched on a hill just steps from the Winterthur grounds, this home had everything except a screened porch from which to fully enjoy its pastoral setting. The new walk-out porch complements the stately character of the house and its region through carefully chosen materials and details.
Elevated on a brick-faced foundation, the porch aligns seamlessly with the existing first floor and is directly accessed through a pair of original sliders from the open kitchen. Custom French pocket doors were added to the adjacent dining room, enhancing flow and connection throughout the main living spaces. The structure is framed in painted mahogany, with wrapped columns and a lapped-siding knee wall. Bronze screens add durability along with a subtle, shimmering glow.
A hipped roof with copper valleys, ridge vent and rain chains shelters the space, while a blue slate floor with a central brass drain allows for easy cleaning. Overhead, a painted mahogany tongue-and-groove tray ceiling and soffit are carefully detailed with recessed lighting inside and out. Completing the outdoor living experience is a custom brick and mahogany trellis.
Whether hosting lively gatherings, watching the sunset, or listening to morning birds, the porch welcomes all. It gently blurs the boundary between indoors and out, bringing the landscape into daily life.
